The contract for the construction of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands was signed on the 19th of July, by the Director of the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Society of Information (ACIISI) of the Canary Islands Government, Mr. Juan Ruiz Alzola, as Chairman of Strategic Council of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), and Mr. Pedro Gallardo Juberías the Sole Manager of the U.T.E. (Temporary Joint Venture), comprising Acciona Infraestructuras, S.A. and Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones, S.A. (UTE Plataforma Marítima).
The AVORA team from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria consisting of Aarón Martínez, Anil Mahtani, David Morales, Enrique Fernández, Federico Maniscalco, and Luis Sánchez, with Dr. Jorge Cabrera as the supervisor, has come back this week from La Spezia, Italy, after participating in the underwater robotics competition SAUCE´12 (http://www.sauc-europe.org/).

The Canary Islands Oceanic Platform -PLOCAN- as International Excellence Campus (CEI) promoter, within the framework of MaReS transnational cooperation project of the Macaronesian archipelagos in a common strategy for research and technological development in marine sciences, energy and climate change, has scheduled a Summer School on autonomous underwater gliders with will involve students, teachers, institutes and universities from several countries.
On Friday 13th of July 2012, the constitutive meeting for The Maritime Innovative Territories International Network was held in Brest, France. David Horat, the Chief Information Officer of PLOCAN, was there to sign the new agreement and discuss over the future objectives and difficulties on the blue economy or maritime economy. This new international network consists of partners from Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Mexico, United States, China and Vietnam among others.
