On Tuesday, 16th October, the members of parliament for Las Palmas, Sebastián Franquis Vera, Pilar Grande Pesquero, Pedro Quevedo Iturbe and Guillermo Mariscal, and the senators for Gran Canaria, Borja and Josefa Luzardo Benítez de Lugo, visited the facilities of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) in Taliarte, Telde. They showed interest in the possibilities of development of the marine-maritime sector in the Canary Islands, within the European context, in view of the Atlantic Maritime Strategy Forum objectives, the EU Communication on Blue Growth and the Limasol Declaration, which are the main frameworks the EU wants to use to promote the European "blue economy
At LOCEAN-UPMC’s headquarters in Paris, took place from October 10th to 12th, 2012 a workshop between EU-FP7-GROOM project partners in order to establish the specific bases for management and quality control data gathered through underwater gliders in the context of sustainable European infrastructure of marine observation, in line with existing key international initiatives / strategies and international in the field such SeaDataNet, OceanSITES, EuroGOOS, MyOcean, ARGO, ... among others.
On Thursday October 11th, Robert Hopkins gave the talk entitled: "Commercial applications of the Volvo Ocean Race", part of the Continuous Training Plan of PLOCAN.
After 75 days and over 1,600 kilometers of Southbound navigation in the Macaronesian waters between Canaries and Cape Verde Archipelagos, on Saturday October 6th, 2012, aboard RV Islandia, a technical team led by the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands -PLOCAN- in cooperation in this case with members of the National Institute for Fisheries Development (INDP) from Cape Verde, and under supervision of the company Teledyne Webb Research-TWR-, was carried out an in-situ technical off-shore assistance on Silbo glider North of Sao Vicente island.
