Comité Español de Observación Oceánica

Ocean observation presents an important deficit with respect to the terrestrial environment, due to technical and methodological limitations.
However, there is an increasing international interest in the ocean, reflected in several international initiatives and declarations (e.g. SDG14 or G7 Tsukuba Communiqué). In Spain, ocean observation is carried out by several institutions, so far, without a coordinating body. Recently it has been created the Comité Español de Observación Oceánica (CEOO), integrated by the main institutions in the country contributing to ocean observations: IEO, Puertos del Estado, CSIC, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Universidad de Málaga, AZTI Tecnalia, INTECMAR, CETMAR, PLOCAN y SOCIB (most of them participating in this proposal). The CEOO is created to rise up synergies, optimize resources, identify needs and promote the sustainability of the ocean observation system in Spain, attending to its role on the management of the marine services and resources and as a tool for research. In a first phase it will be focused on physical and biogeochemical variables. The present proposal includes the following actions: 1- CEOO general meeting. 2- Meetings of its Executive Committee. 3- Inventory of the ocean observation systems in Spain. 4- A working group on monitoring actions. 5- A working group on to promote the participation in international research consortia and influencing scientific policies. 6- Implement common positions at international ocean organisations. 7- Cost  Analysis of the ocean observation systems. 8- Implementation of a Spanish ocean observation portal.
