Macaronesian Network for Cross-border Knowledge and Technology Transfer to protect, supervise and monitor cetaceans in the marine environment, and to explore and exploit the related tourism in a sustainable way

The MARCET project transfers and disseminates cutting-edge science and technology in order to promote growth and sustainable development of tourism directly and indirectly related to Whale Watching, through the creation of new eco-innovative products and services. In particular, centres specialised in the monitoring and tracking of cetacean health and in operational oceanography will be brought together from across the region in order to integrate, harmonise and optimise knowledge, infrastructures and best practices in the region.

MARCET contributes to the investment priorities that are determined by the smart specialization strategies of the 3 FEDER regions (RIS3). As such, it contributes directly to the social-economic evaluation of the R+D of the marine sciences (in the Canary Islands), to the enhancement of the cooperation and promotion of innovative actions related with the sea (in the Azores Islands) and to the sustainable exploitation of the marine resources and technologies (Madeira Islands). Moreover, involving marine science and technologies directly with the whale watching companies contributes to the improvement of the business competition and diversification of the specialized tourism in all three regions. This is achieved by the appreciation and protection of its biodiversity through sustainable development. Additionally, in the MARCET project it is promoted for the 3 regions the integration of advanced knowledge and expertise in the cutting-edge information and communication technologies (ICTs) which will lead to the increasing of the digital knowledge of the marine sciences and the specialized tourism in the Macaronesian region.

MARCET also contributes to the scientific and economic development of Cape Verde and Senegal, two major Macaronesian TCs (Third Countries) which are included in the MAC 2014-2020 program. They participate through the exchange of means and resources with the FEDER regions which promotes a transfer and sharing of knowledge and technology for the study of cetaceans and their habitat.
