El Océano - La Química de la Vida

Within the framework of the International Year of Chemistry, the initiative "The Ocean, Chemistry of Life" tries to expose, in an educational and entertaining way, using a wide range of educational, audiovisual and technological resources, the role that chemical sciences have played in the existing knowledge of the ocean and marine life. Likewise it aims to emphasize its vital importance, both today and in the future, for the work of monitoring the health of our seas, our atmosphere and life on our planet.

With this vision, the exhibition aimed at secondary school, high school and university students, as well as the general public, is complete regarding concepts, and serves both the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain, allowing visitors to go in a simple manner, from fundamental theoretical basic concepts to understanding the chemical processes that occur in the ocean, its relation to the origin of life and the environmental balance of the planet. Visitors will be able to see, touch and understand through guided explanations, oceanographic instruments and equipment, both the common and the cutting edge, including three types of oceanographic buoys and the three types of gliders that are commercially available nowadays, among others.

The exhibition "The Ocean, Chemistry of Life" is an initiative of the Canary Islands Oceanic Platform (PLOCAN), in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas (ULPGC) and the Canary Institute of Marine Sciences (ICCM).
