The OceanObs'19 Conference, “An Ocean of Opportunity”, which was sponsored by government agencies linked to the international strategy on ocean observation, took place in Honolulu (HI, USA) between 16th and 20th September and brought together more than 1900 attendees from 74 nations and a hundred leading companies in the sector.
One hundred university students of the Peritia et Doctrina Association visited the land-based facilities of PLOCAN during the XVIII International Conferences on Senior Programme Associationism, an annual meeting between Senior University Associations associated to public and private universities of the European Union. Its 2019 edition has been organised in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

PLOCAN hosts the KOSMOS GC 2019, led by GEOMAR (Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel) started on the 3rd of September and will extent until mid October.
In the framework of the Ocean artUp project, an international team of 35 marine scientists will study the feasibility, effectiveness, associated risks and potential side effects of ocean artificial upwelling in fertilizing ocean productivity and enhancing energy transfer to higher trophic levels with the potential of raising fish production. Ocean artUp will further investigate the impacts of artificial upwelling on biogeochemical cycling, including carbon export potential and air-sea gas exchange of climate relevant gases.
MaRINET2, the Marine Renewables Infrastructure Network for Enhancing Energy Technologies, is composed of 39 organizations who collaborate to progress offshore renewable energy technologies in Europe. MaRINET2 is a project supported by the European Commission in the Horizon 2020 Program and funded with €10.5 million, from which PLOCAN gets 85.500 euros financed at 100%. The project builds on the original MARINET one, which ran from 2011 until 2015, and depends on strong offshore renewable energy testing facilities in Europe and draws on the expertise and participation of 13 European countries. Its main objective is to accelerate the development of wave, tidal and offshore wind energy technologies and infrastructure by opening up access to 57 test facilities across the consortium countries.
The first three MaRINET2 calls awarded €3.5 million in free testing access to almost 100 users, delivering over 250 weeks of free-of-charge testing at the MaRINET2 network of facilities. The fourth call for proposals runs from 15 August - 30 September and will fund test programs in operation between 1 January – 30 June 2020.
