Student Lennard Frommhold, from the University of Odenburg in Germany, has completed a three-month stay at PLOCAN, from May to July, financed by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission. The stay was organised as part of the science and technology development for the Seventh Framework Programme European project NeXOS, which is co-ordinated by PLOCAN.

NeXOS seeks to improve the temporal and spacial coverage, resolution and quality of marine observations through the development of cost-effective, innovative and inter-operable sensors that can be deployed using various platforms and integrated with web services.

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) and the Corporation for the Economic Development of Gran Canaria (SPEGC) of Gran Canaria Island Council have signed a collaboration agreement in a joint strategy to attract businesses and projects in the marine and maritime sector, to promote technology transfer between local businesses and the Oceanic Platform, and to participate together in projects financed by the state or by the European Union, as well as to launch programmes for training, entrepreneurship and the speeding up of business projects.

The Councillor for Economic Development, Energy and R&D&I of Gran Canaria Island Council and chairman of the SPEGC, Raúl García Brink, and the director of PLOCAN, Octavio Llinás González, signed the agreement in the presence of the president of the Island Council, Antonio Morales, who framed the agreement within the context of the Island Council’s strategy to support initiatives for the development of the blue economy and research and development projects with links to the local economy. This agreement adds to others that have been signed with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Algae Bank and the ITC.
