On Saturday 24th October 2015, the 6th PLOCAN Glider School, concluded, having been held in the facilities of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) in Telde, Gran Canaria.

Students and teachers representing some twenty international technology companies and twelve oceanographic research institutions from eleven countries (Brazil, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Cyprus, Norway, Greece, France, Finland, Germany and Spain) took part in six days of theoretical and practical training sessions, working both in the laboratory and in open water. For some, this has been an introduction to submarine glider technology, while for others it has allowed them to broaden their knowledge of this area.

This week, technicians from PLOCAN have been in Funchal (Madeira) working with personnel from Madeira Port Authority (APRAM) and the Hydrographic Institute of Portugal (IH) to carry out the tasks of expanding and improving the autonomous marine observation devices that form part of the Macaronesian Marine and Maritime Network (R3M).

The maintenance and improvement activities consisted of updating certain components of the power supply system of a buoy that is regularly anchored off the island of Porto Santo, as well as replacing sensors in the oceanographic station located in the commercial port of Caniçal.
